Udupi, Nov 27: District in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya has kindled hopes of the district being declared as totally literate by March 2007.

Speaking at the inauguration of the convention of newly literates and Munduvarika Shikshana Yojane, he said that steps would be initiated to educate the current 3,278 illiterates in the district. He stressed on the need to conduct surveys in rural areas in this regard.

The programme was presided over by MLA Raghupati Bhat while Rajya Loka Shikshana commissioner inaugurated the Kalika Kendra. Zilla panchayat president Shankar Poojary flagged off the jatha.

Krishnapura Math pontiff Vidyasagar Teertha, ZP CEO Hemalata and SP Subrahmanyeshwara Rao were present.
