Mangalore, Nov 28: Dakshina Kannada district Special Olympics 2006 and Karnataka State Bocce Championship organized by St Agnes Special School in association with Special Olympics Bharat- Karnataka (SOBK) were inaugurated at St Aloysius College Centenary Ground on Tuesday November 28 morning.
The event kicked off with a march past by the students of the participating special schools.
Deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao inaugurated the meet. Speaking on the occasion, he mentioned that holding a programme like a sports meet for the specially-abled is not easy because of the extra care and added responsibility attached to it. He congratulated the organizers for arranging the event.
Board of Director of SOBK, Balakrishna revealed that India has been a consistent performer at the international-level in special Olympics. A notable point that was made was that India is able to win several medals in the special Olympics on a consistent basis unlike the major Olympics, where India hardly gets any medal.
Popular bandmaster Harry D'Souza was felicitated on the occasion.
Six schools are taking part in the event. St Agnes Special School Mangalore, Sanidhya Special School Mangalore, Chethana Special School Mangalore, Lions' Special School Surathkal, Krista Raj Special School Venur, and St Mary's Special School Kinnigoli are the ones participating.
Sports events like long jump, soft ball throw, running race, walking race etc are some of the events that will take place.
A state level Bocce Championship was the highlight of the event. Teams from across the state including Bangalore and Dharwad took part.
