Kolkata, Dec 17 (IANS): A first year medical student was arrested Wednesday and remanded to police custody in connection with last month's lynching and alleged bobbitisation of a man at NRS Medical College and Hospital, the police said.

The body of Korpan Shah, 28, suspected of being a mobile phone thief, was recovered from the boys' hostel of NRS Medical College Nov 16. He was found tied to a pillar and beaten to death with bamboo sticks allegedly by a group of junior doctors and students.

The attackers even allegedly inflicted injuries on the genitals of Shah, who had been mentally unstable following an accident and the death of his mother.

"We have arrested Jasimuddin, a first year student, in connection with the lynching," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) P.K. Ghosh said.

Jasimuddin was presented before a city court, which rejected his bail plea and remanded him to police custody till Dec 24.

The arrest comes a month after the incident which has drawn widespread condemnation and allegations against the authorities of trying to "hush up" the matter.

Besides seeking the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission, city-based rights group Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has approached the Calcutta High Court to seek a probe monitored by it as well as compensation for Shah's family.

Meanwhile, Shah's wife Arjina Begum has accused the police of neglecting the case.

"After a month, they have managed to arrest just one person. Had the police not neglected the case, all those who killed my husband mercilessly would have been jailed. I demand justice, I want all the culprits to be arrested," said Arjina.
