Workshop on handling mentally challenged children

New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS): To train staff in institutions which handle mentally challenged children, an NGO Friday organised a workshop here to prepare social workers to better help such children.

The two-day workshop titled 'Mental health and interventions for better care management of institutionalised children and young adults' trained the staff on how to help such children.

"Children in institutions cannot be clubbed as a homogeneous group, as each child faces distinctly different risks depending on whether the child is a boy or a girl, stays in urban or rural areas," said Kiran Modi, managing trustee, Udayan Care.

Udayan is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working for the welfare of orphaned children.

"With such workshops, we aim to create a trained cadre of social workers, staff members and volunteers, capable of addressing issues related to such children," he said.
