Margao, Dec 8: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC),  in response to a demand from local shopkeepers, conducted a drive against the traders carrying on unauthorized sale of clothes and other items, without seeking permission from council. Clothes and plastic items worth Rs 35,000 were seized in the operation.

Shopkeepers of New Market and Gandhi Market had gheraoed MMC Chief officer Yashwant Tawde and Chairperson Rajendra Ajgaonkar on Wednesday and had demanded action against those sellings goods without authorization.

According to these shopkeepers, who have been paying taxes and conducting business according to the law, they have been facing losses, while people keep buying from unauthorized sellers, whose business causes lossed to the government by evading taxes.

Meanwhile, the New Market shopkeepers have served ultimatum to MMC that if they (MMC) discontinued the drive then the shopkeepers would call for a bandh on December 12 December and lay siege on the MCC office.
