Mangalore, Dec 21: The members of taluk panchayats (TPs) in the district expressed their concern over the declining importance of TPs at a meeting convened here on Wednesday December 20.
The meeting, only the third of its kind in the district, saw the participation of TP presidents, vice-presidents, other office-bearers and members’ federation. They lamented that the powers given to TPs was lesser than that given to gram panchayats.
Speaking on the occasion, Bantwal TP vice-president Usman Karopady said that even the financial aid given to the TPs has decreased in recent times. He informed that an appeal has been already placed before the government stating various demands for the benefit of the TPs.
The members said that the TPs should be either treated with due importance or be scraped from the Panchayat Raj system.
Local TP president Gokuldas Shetty demanded the participation of TP members in the gram panchayat meetings and said that it would help in bettering coordination between the two panchayats.
Members and office-bearers of various taluk panchayats were present.
