Puttur, Jan 19: In spite of heightened security measures in the district, four shops in Uppinangady and nearby places were torched late night on Saturday January 17.

It is reported that unknown miscreants entered the shop owned by Yogeesh Prabhu in the heart of Uppinangady and took away Rs 1.72 lac cash kept inside. They torched the shop before leaving it, inflicting heavy losses by way burnt bakery items, fruits, vegetables etc worth lacs of rupees. Loss by way of fire has been estimated at Rs. 4 lac. The police said that closed circuit cameras here have recorded two pedestrians entering the shop and torching it.

A garage owned by Sudheen Shetty was also similarly started. Tyres, spare parts, oil etc worth about Rs 4.5 lac were destroyed in this incident, it is said.

A shop owned by Chidananda at Subhas Nagara in Nekkilady was also set on fire. Another shop owned by Raveendra Poojary at Perne Kadambu also suffered heavy loss on account of fire. In this case, loss suffered by Poojary is estimated to be about Rs 2.5 lac.

Fire brigade from Puttur arrived on the spot and helped locals to douse the flame. However, by the time the fire in the first shop was extinguished, they got call from another shop. As they did not have water to pump, a panchayat employee entrusted with water supply was woken up at night, and with his help, the tank was filled and used for dousing fire in the next shop, it is gathered.
