Udupi, Jan 23: Brahmavar Sports Club established by like minded sports lovers in order to spread the flavour of sports has completed ten years.
Inspiration for starting the club:
An inter district junior sports event was held under the aegis of Brahmavar S M S group of institutes under the leadership of Brahmavar MLA K Jayaprakash Hegde. Several people belonging to Bangalore Sports club saw the participation of national and international sports persons in it. They asked physical education director M Chandrashekar Hegde and Gregory D'Silva to start a sports club. This became an inspiration to unite sports lovers to start a Brahmavar sports club in 2005.
Achievements:
The club started with seven to eight people and now has grown beyond expectation and is one of the best clubs in the state.
Sports Activities:
The club held free training for the students in the vicinity twice in a year during initial three years. The free training camps have slowly spread to Udupi district. The specialty of the club has been to impart training by experts.
Sports celebrations:
The club has identified talented sports achievers and awarded cash, gifts to many while commemorating hockey player’s life like Dhyan Chand on August 29, 2014 and the national sports day. It has also been honouring trainers and teachers with special achievements awards.
The club gives special training in three tennis courts at S M S College, which is rare in undivided Dakshina Kannada district. It has been conducting junior national tennis tournaments for the last five years. Karnataka Lawn Tennis association has recognized Brahmavar Sports Club. Brahmavar Sports Academy conducts training throughout the year. The club has a very active tennis academy.
Friendly tournaments:
The district police team, teams of elected representatives, Rotary team, teams of district officials, journalist's team and others are conducting friendly independent tournaments in the name of the club. Inter district tennis tournaments have been held for the last five years.
Achievements:
The club has successfully conducted inter district women's tennis tournament in Brahmavar S M S College in 2008, International sports festival in 2010, South India inter university women's Kho Kho tournament in 2013, Pre University College students sports tournament in 2005, High school and primary school students sports tournaments in 2011. The club has cooperated as sponsors in high school and state tennis tournaments. It has constructed Volleyball court and pits for long jump and high jump.
The club provides honorary certificates and cash prizes for achievers in different sports activities. It also provides sports instruments to poor sports persons. The contribution of Brahmavar S M S group of institutes is tremendous. Donors and sports lovers have encouraged the activities.
Club founder president Dr Praveen Kumar Shetty, subsequent presidents Madamakki Shashidhar Shetty, Dr Prakash Tholar and present president Bharath Kumar Shetty and convener M Chandrashekar Hegde and secretary Gregory D'Silva have worked hard to script the success and achievements of the club.
The club is trying to get government lands for sports ground and dreams of a full-fledged sports complex.
The club has also won Ekalavya award, Youth empowerment, Nammoora shale Nammoora Jana awards.
As part of the tenth anniversary, the club will hold the following sports events- men's Kabbadi tournament in floodlights in Brahmavar Pre-University college grounds on January 24, national marathon for men and women on January 25, and long distance race for primary school, high school, college students and senior citizens above 50 years. The tenth anniversary celebrations will be held at Brahmavar S M S Pre-University College Pandal on January 25 evening.
To mark the tenth anniversary, a Tulu comedy drama composed by Vijayakumar Kodialbail titled as 'Mami' and Yakshagana will be staged by selected artistes of Perdooru group.
