AAP leader to join liquor seizure probe after election

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS): Hours after Delhi Police Friday served another notice to him, AAP candidate Naresh Balyan said he will join the probe into the recovery and seizure of over 8,000 bottles of liquor after the Feb 7 assembly election.

Balyan's advocate along with some Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members met Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi and assured him that the AAP candidate will join the probe Sunday, a day after the elections.

Considering Balyan's request, the Delhi Police extended its notice and gave him relief till Saturday.

Earlier, Bassi said that many summons had already been issued to Balyan, the AAP candidate from the Uttam Nagar constituency.

"We have issued another notice to him to join the probe," he said.

Bassi said that if necessary, "we will lodge a case against Balyan and he can be arrested".

"Our Crime Branch team started investigating the case after around 400 liquor cartons were found from a house belonging to Balyan," the commissioner said.

Asked if the Delhi Police were working under pressure to take action against AAP leader, Bassi said: "We investigate impartially. There is no pressure on us and we also do not work under pressure.

"On Jan 31, a team of Delhi Police's Crime Branch seized 497 cartons containing 8,352 bottles of liquor from a house in Uttam Nagar's Om Vihar area. The bottles were labelled "for sale in Haryana".

Police then registered a case against unidentified persons and started investigation.

Police said the liquor was brought to Delhi from Haryana's Bahadurgarh, and they had also informed the Election Commission about the incident.
