BJP's Delhi debacle a personal defeat for Modi?

By Sreeparna Chakrabarty
New Delhi, Feb 10 (IANS): He campaigned like a local leader, handpicked his own chief ministerial candidate for Delhi and made it a personal referendum on his leadership. Yet Prime Minister Narendra Modi could not halt the AAP juggernaut in these assembly polls and in the process lost his first election since his winning streak began with the Gujarat assembly polls in 2002.

Modi delivered Gujarat for his party for three consecutive terms in 2002, 2007 and 2012 after he was parachuted to the state from Delhi in 2001. His portrayal as the party's prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 general election was a direct result of this winning spree and he managed to win yet again with the BJP for the first time getting a full majority in the Lok Sabha.

Despite assiduous efforts by the party to firewall him from the defeat, the facts are inescapable that the BJP - and Modi personally - has paid the price for putting his own image and reputation at stake in a provincial poll.

In fact Kiran Bedi's defeat in the Krishna Nagar constituency should be a personal defeat for Modi, who not only chose her in spite of her not even being a primary member of the party, but campaigned aggressively for her in ways no prime minister has done for a local poll.

The BJP campaign bypassed local leaders and focussed solely on Modi's supposedly personal charisma. It was obvious that Bedi as the chief ministerial candidate was just a proxy and Modi intended to exploit his own larger than life image in this election.

Such was his hubris that Modi stuck his neck out and put himself loud and large in every advertisement of the party in the election - from bus shelters to billboards to newspapers.

All posters and full page advertisements in newspapers even on the day of polling had full blown pictures of Modi with Bedi, the party's chief ministerial candidate, occupying only inset space at the bottom. In a personal letter to voters on election day Feb 7, Modi promised a "world-class city" and said it was his undertaking that he would make Delhi a city that its citizens would be proud of.

Modi held four rallies in the run up to the Delhi polls, stretching from Ambedkar Nagar to Rohini, but his party could not manage to win even four seats. Kejriwal raced home in 67 of the 70 assembly seats with his "paanch saal Kejriwal (Five years to Kejriwal)" slogan.

But will Modi be held accountable for the massive drubbing his party got in the Delhi polls?

Not if the party leaders and spokesmen are to be believed. Despite the call by Kirti Azad, a medium-level leader of the party, that "heads should roll", most of the party faces that came on television sought to shield Modi and declared that it was "not a referendum on his prime ministership."

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said it was not a national election and did not reflect on Modi. In fact, BJP President Amit Shah in an interview last week seems to have sought anticipatory bail for his leader saying: "Delhi polls will not be a referendum on Modi".

Modi's Rs.10 lakh suit with his name written on it during US President Barack Obama's visit and his supposedly arrogant style of functioning seem to have rubbed people the wrong way.

Most political analysts have blamed his arrogant style for BJP's massive defeat in the Delhi election. Veteran journalist and commentator Kuldip Nayar told IANS: "The way the BJP carried out a Modi-centric campaign, any loss is of course a reflection on him (prime minister)."

Kejriwal's win seems to be the beginning of a new political era for the country with a focus on local leaders and local issues - bijli, paani, sadak - instead of high voltage foreign policy initiatives which Modi seems to have shown a flair for.

The common man or the 'Aam Aadmi' seems to be asking the prime minister how his life can change even if Obama was Modi's best friend.

As Congress leader Manish Tewari summed it up: "People wanted to teach BJP (read Modi) and its arrogance a lesson, they decided AAP is the instrument of their choice rather than Congress."

BJP’s Biggest blunder was projecting Kiran Bedi as CM candidate whom Delhites regarded as an outsider and inexperienced newcomer in the political arena. The party would have won at least 20 to 25 seats had Dr. Harshvardhan had come to the fray. Other reasons such as hate speeches, ghar wapsi and church attacks were secondary to majority of voters.

Delhi defeat is not 'personal defeat' of FEKU, it is slap on his face by voters.

Being a PM of the country, he spoke very cheaply against Kejriwal & AAP in election rallies.

Any party PM should not attend election rallies, if they attend, they should maintain dignity of their chair/post. FEKU is behaving like 'Tapori' in election rallies...!

People should realize that nothing comes free in this world. All productivity comes from the people themselves. What you sow so shall you reap. However whether its BJP or AAM AADMI basics things are still not done yet. Why Govt schools are badly managed, why every law enforcer uses law as a tool to extract money. Why Roads are bad, why cities stink?? Why so many vehicles on the road why a simple thing like following traffic rules does not exist. Its the same Aam Aadmi. First we need to discipline ourselves, then talk about what the Govt can do for you.

How can you achieve growth when the country is splintered along lines of religion?

The more your militant extremist party divides Indians the more it is bound to collapse and not rise.

    Congrats AAP!
Now we have to see whether Kejriwal will keep his promises as promise only or will he deliver.
Because yesterday, one of the AAP leaders Mr. Sanjay told that, If Modi Gov't give money, then only AAP can fulfill their promises.
In that case, again this gov't will not last for long for the below reasons:
    AAP manifest during election:
    1. Full statehood for Delhi - It requires Constitutional amendment through Act of Parliament
    2. Stronger Lok Pal in Delhi -Needs the Delhi lietenant governor’s approval,as it is seen as a money Bill the LG had refused to give his consent during AAP’s previous stint in govt
    3. Reform of DDA and MCD - DDA and MCD are under control of the Centre, and not the Delhi govt.
4.Regularising illegal colonies - While the Delhi govt can regularise these colonies, the Union urban development ministry has the powers
    to change land-use.
    5. Open access in power discoms - This could run into legal hurdles, as power discoms have signed with the Delhi govt contracts that extend up to 2027.
    6. Video record of court cases - The Supreme Court has said no to this in a recent judgment.
    7. 500 new schools, 20 colleges - The land will have to be made available by the Union urban development ministry.

Without Centre's support Kejri cannot do anything. Let us hope for the best. Sometimes I think, by losing Delhi election, is this the plan game by present Gov't to divert attention of public who are getting restless from Modi's inability to deliver promises he made in the last election?

Is it a Big defeat - YES! is it a personal defeat - YES! But is it right to write political obituary - NO WAY!

No man would want to lose any fight. But sometimes, like in cricket, few matches are lost, deliberately to place yourself in a position in score table, so that you get easy opponent in your next round! will be smart if you get it!

COngress had made a similar leader to beat Communists in Maharastra. crowd puller, agitator, anarchist- Balasaheb! he succeeded, but when he went out of their hand - they created MNS to further split his chances.. ).. Pawar told MNS, to fight municipal elections and start from there. He got NASIK municipality and FAILED! sarkaar chalana, agitation karna alag hai! Then finally Gadkari, made him silent and made sure, he will get close to zero percent vote - BJP won..MNS lost its party position!

I am not saying AK will be having same fate. but with 67 seats, he will be in a big troubled position. his first hurdle will be choosing his ministers from that lot. there would be disappointments. And one important thing, those 67 people are also not "party bound"! they are like their leaders too.. "Agitator, anarchists and 'yee -panda ninna ^mme" types"! it will be interesting days.. though I wont write obituary for AK either!

Suman, If you think carefully it is Modi's preference to surround himself with people incapable of rational thought that have brought him to his knees. People just like you.

No party has won over 50% of votes so far including Congress in 1984. (I believe AAP is the first party to cross 50% mark).
This clearly states that all anti BJP votes were taken by AAP. That also explains why Congress lost deposits in incredible 62 seats!

In the past whenever parties joined hand to fight one party (Congress), they defeated it. (example- 1977, 1989 and 1998 elections). Now all parties are joining hands to defeat BJP. If they manage that BJP will be in trouble in Bihar or UP.

The question is where the Congress is heading now?

Media made Modi what he is now,
the same will bring him his downfall as well.
He was Aristocratic, arrogant, insensitive, indifferent & was only rhetoric rather than any real development on the ground.
He targeted Aap & Kejriwal with personal attacks forgetting people supported him when he was under fire.
The negative campaign saw his downfall, from now on he won't be able to hide behind his silence when a leader needs to stand up & get counted to be PM of 120 crores Indians & not narrow minded religious zealot.
Unless he REFORMS he will cause BJP the biggest Damage from which they won't recover for another 20 years.

as a pm modi have to fight a dozen state elections.untill now he has all 4 big states along with single handed majority only by his name in loksabha elections.

just by loosing delhi which is nothing more than a mucipality size, claiming modi got defeared is silly to say the least.

modis real test comes in bihar assembly elections which may happen in may due to sever infighting in current govt.
modi will show his power there.then all rats will dissappear in rathole.

'nothing more than a municipality size'(sic)

This is what arrogance is all about which has triggered the downfall of BJP, good that people like Sunil, with their minds as narrow as eye of the needle, will never realize this and they'll go on blabbering with their borrowed ideas/comments just like their Mahaguru!

All credit for landslide victor of AAP goes to stupid comments of Sakshi Maharaj and illiterate Sadhvi. Also, RSS has contributed remarkably with their 'Ghar Vapsi', an act which was so stupid and non beneficial to every one. We, Hindus are peace loving people, like co-exist with people of every religion. Few fringe elements who do not want to earn their living with hard work encash their luxury life by fooling innocent Hindus. Delhi election has proved that BJP's foolish idea of fundamentalism is rejected by majority and now RSS has drawn a line for Modi's Ghar Vapsi to Gujarat. Good luck Mr. Kajeriwal. Never mix up religion with Politics and you will succeed in your dream to make India a better place for people to live.

Dont forget that there is something known as 'act of omission' for which Modi is famous. Modi neither criticized nor put a stop to utterances/deeds of Sakshi Maharaj and the likes and the RSS and the arrest of priests, nuns and children in Delhi. Modi stayed a silent spectator. That will be his downfall. People of India are not stupid.

    @Sunil,

It is even more absurd, being PM of India, that too ruling from Delhi, personally campaigning for a Kachra candidate misusing state machinery and funds, abusing Kejri at every available chance winning only 3 seats is not a national disgrace of this century??
