Udupi, Mar 1: Gilbert Fernandes from Marne-Moodubelle who served first in the office of St Mary’s PU College, Shirva for five years and later in St Mary’s Degree College for 30 years, retired on Saturday, February 28.

The send off function in honour of Gilbert Fernades was held at St Mary’s College. It was presided over by the principal Dr Rajan and attended by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. Appreciating the long dedicated service of Gilbert Fernandes, he was honoured with citation which was presented to him by the principal.

Gilbert Fernandes was born as sixth among eight children of late Immanuel and Mary Fernandes on February 2, 1955 at Marne, Moodubelle. He had his primary education in Church Aided Higher Primary School and high school education in St Lawrence High School, Moodubelle. Thereafter, he continued his education in St Mary’s PU College, Shirva and acquired B Com degree from PPC College, Udupi.

Being a graduate in commerce, Gilbert served as a second grade clerk in St Mary’s PU College office from July 3, 1979 to December 31, 1984. Since the establishment of St Mary’s Degree College on July 21, 1980, Gilbert also served in the office of the college till December 31, 1984. From January 1, 1985, Gilbert was appointed as the first grade clerk in the office of St Mary’s Degree College. Realizing the importance of higher education, Gilbert acquired M Com degree through the Karnataka Open University in 1984.

Having proved his ability in the college office by his sincerity, efficiency and hard work, Gilbert was promoted to the post of office superintendent from September 5, 1991. During the last 30 years, Gilbert handled the office work of St Mary’s College with great ability and dedication.

Gilbert married Ida Maria on February 16, 1988. Among their two sons, Glen is no more, whereas second son Gavin is Mechanical Engineer.
