Bangalore, Feb 1: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts' English Medium Schools Association on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister H D Kuma-raswamy to exempt these two districts from compulsory imposition of Kannada medium as language of instruction in primary schools.

In the memorandum, the Association submitted that in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts a majority of the population do not have Kannada as their mother tongue.

Their mother tongue is either Konkani, Tulu, Beary or Kodava and English. Hence compulsory imposition of Kannada medium as language of instruction at the primary level is causing a serious problem to these children, the memorandum said.

Appealed

The Association also appealed to the government not to withdraw recognition of schools which do not impart education in Kannada medium to students from 1st to 5th standard.

Legislator Jayaprakash Hedge and former minister B A Mohideen submitted the memorandum on behalf of the association.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said the request will be placed before the Cabinet meeting.
