Mangaluru, Mar 8: "From past several years women have been fighting for equality. Empowerment of women is an essential aspect of the society.The gender discrimination is still prevalent in the society," said Uma M G Principal - District and Session Judge DK.

She was addressing gathering on 'Empowerment of women - Empowerment of humanity' at St Agnes college organized by Women's Cell in association with Women's Study 

Center to mark International Women’s Day here on Saturday March 7.

She also said that “In entire world women population constitutes of 50% of the total population.It is not only India were women are facing legal,economic,social
discrimination, even in other parts of the world, women are still considered as the second class citizens. Women should realize that Indian constitution has provided equality among genders as the fundamental rights. Women will be empowered when they are provided with education, authority,opportunity and
power.If a women is empowered, the humanity is empowered, the society is empowered.” she concluded.

Earlier, a dance performance by on the theme ‘Save girl child’ was presented and a mimic was performed by Chaitra and group addressing the ‘2012 Delhi gang rape - Nirbhaya case’. A Karate performance was also done to symbolize self defence.
