Mangaluru, Mar 26: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, instructed the jail supervisory staff to regularly conduct health check-up of jail inmates to ensure that their health condition is monitored on regular basis. He also suggested for conducting dental check-up in association with dental colleges in the city.

He was speaking after holding a meeting of visitors committee at the jail premises on Wednesday March 25.

Ibrahim said that accused students and those who enter the jail after their first minor crime should not be confined in the cells of hardcore criminals. He also felt that the problem of presenting inmates of the jail in courts in case of inter-district crimes can be solved by arranging video conferencing.Towards reinforcing security at the jail, he asked the concerned to put up proposals for providing guns to additional personnel. He said he would take further action after holding discussions with the police commissioner.

Chief district judge, Uma, suggested to introduce Yoga classes to bring in psychological changes in the people lodged in jail and also provide them skill development training.

Earlier in the day, both DC and the judge went through the barracks and inspected facilities including toilets, kitchen, godown etc. They also interacted with the inmates about their health. They visited the women's cell and old jail.

Deputy commissioner of police, Vishnuvardhan, PWD executive engineer, Dharmaraj, district health officer, Dr Ramakrishna Rao, Wenlock Hospital surgeon, Dr Rajeshwari Devi, assistant superintendent of police, Shekharappa, and jail superintendent, Obaleshappa, were present.
