Murder of Vishwanath Shetty after PFI rally in Shivamogga - three held

Mangaluru, Apr 20: Relating to the murder of Vishwanath Shetty at Gajanur after the rally organized at Shivamogga by Popular Front of India on February 19 this year came to an end, the police have made three more arrests from the taluk.

The people now arrested are, Abubakker alias Putta (32) working as alluminium fabricator, Ummer Farooq (25), resident of Moodushedde Yedurupadavu, working as driver of an ambulance, and Muhammed Iqbal (27) from the same village, who is an auto rickshaw driver by profession.

The policemen said that these three persons have confessed to their crime, duly confirming that three more, Illyas, Sajuddin, and Jaleel, were with them at the time of committing this crime. With these three arrests, the total number of arrests in the case has gone up to seven.

The police have recovered cudgels used for the attack. After committing the deed, the accused had hidden these sticks and swords under water pipe by the roadside near Gajanur Agrahara, the policemen said. They are now looking out for the other accused in the case. The police team led by Shivamogga deputy superintendent of police, Dr Ramu Arasiddi, is continuing with the investigation.

Vishwanath Shetty, and his friends, Chandrashekhar and Ravikumar, who were returning to Shivamogga after having dinner at Gajanur at about 8 pm on February 19 had been assaulted by a gang. Vishwanath Shetty, who had suffered critical injuries, had died in a hospital later.

A team led by Bhadravati deputy superintendent of police, had undertaken investigation and arrested four persons, Muhammed Mushar, a diploma student of civil engineering, Ahmed, an interior designer, grape juice distributors, Arshad Ahmed, and Muhammed Hanif, all from Kundapur taluk. They are in judicial custody.
