Chikkamagaluru, Apr 21: The police arrested Ganesh (36) from Menase near Sringeri, who they say is the main accused, in connection with the acid attack on a woman which has left her badly injured. A team led by police circle inspector, Sudhir M Hegde, made this arrest based on leads provided by the victim.
The woman, a divorcee, runs a beauty parlour in Sringeri. It is said that Ganesh had come close to her since sometime. After he proposed to her recently, the lady reportedly spurned his advances, and cut off all contacts with him and ended the 18-month-long friendship.
The policemen said that the accused tried to project as if he was in Manipal on Saturday, the day on which the woman was attacked. They claimed that he had actually remained behind the scenes in Sringeri on that day, and contracted miscreants to throw acid at the woman for just Rs 5,000. The police personnel are now on the look out for the two who executed this heinous crime, and another person who is believed to have supported them in the act.
The injured woman has since been shifted to Narayana Netralaya in Bengaluru. One of her eyes has become dysfunctional, while other eye has been partly damaged by the acid, sources said.
In the meanwhile, parents of the lady are worried about the future of their daughter, her eight-year-old son, and about repayment of the loan raised by her to build a house. Her father, who has two daughters, works as a daily wager to earn livelihood.
