Mangalore, Mar 14: The Mangalore University has banned the use of mobile phones by students and teachers in its affiliate and constituent colleges and in the university campus at Mangalagangotri.

Registrar of the university K. Sundar Naik has issued an order to this effect.

According to it, the use of mobile phones in classrooms, libraries, examination halls, laboratories, and during seminars and workshops, has been banned with immediate effect.

It said that the Syndicate of the university in its meeting on January 5, 2007 discussed in detail about the issue and decided to ban the use of mobile phones in the academic interest.

The Syndicate took note of the instances of students using mobile phones in classrooms, laboratories, libraries and examination halls, and considered it as an alarming development.

The order authorizes college principals to seize phones from students if they violated the order, initiate disciplinary action against them and impose a fine on them.

The principals of the constituent colleges have been told to take measures to ensure that the ban was implemented fully.
