Mangaluru, Apr 25: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Karmika Parishath (R), Tempo Chalaka - Malakara Sangha (R), Auto Chalaka and Bus Chalakara Sangh (R) protested against central government’s 'Road Transport and Safety Bill-2014' at DC’s office, here on Saturday April 25.

Addressing the protesters, Canara Bus Owners' Association president Rajavarma Ballal said, “Without motor vehicle, it is not possible for us to move from one place to another. In the motor vehicle act, the fines have been increased which is not acceptable. Even in the case of stopping the vehicles on the zebra cross, we have to pay fine. For small mistakes imposing heavy fines on poor people is very harsh. Central government should see to it that no person is put to harm because of the new act”.

MLC Ivan D'Souza said, “Central government should see to it that no person's life is put at stake. The government is taking farmers lands without giving proper compensation. So far, we had to pay Rs 100 to 200 for driving license but anymore we have to pay Rs 5,000 for it and to renew it we have to pay up to Rs 3,000”.

"This new rule is meant for the rich people and not for the poor people. This is not a capitalist country. Road Transport and Safety Bill-2014 will harm the future of India. PM Modi does not have any concern for people. Before bringing this kind of rule, first repair the roads of India. I will salute at the central government if they bring back the black money”, he added.

“By giving transportation department into the hands of the multinational companies, the government has put driving schools and garage owners on the roads. It is clear that the Central Government's policies are in the favour of capitalism. It clearly indicates that the taxi drivers, gas welders, electricians and others are left out in the scheme of development”, he further said.

Mithun Rai, Ashith Periera, Merril Rego, Praveen Chandra Alva and others were also present for the protest.
