Mangalore, Mar 24: Unemployed and short of skills? Then enrol at the nearest ‘Finishing School’ at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Suratkal to be completely transformed into a ‘employable and specialist’ in the area of Information Technology.
The concept of ‘Finishing School’ was envisaged when the Ministry of Human Resources (MHR) in New Delhi decided to tackle IT industry’s nagging complaints on most engineering graduates streaming out from the colleges being unemployable.
Thus the school is being implemented as the pilot project in eight institutions including NITK, NIT Trichy, Calicut, Jaipur, Surat, Warangal, Durgapur and IIT Rourkee. “Centres were decided on the proximity to areas with plenty of IT opportunities,” Head of Computer Department of NITK, Prof Vinay Kumar said.
The Finishing School planned from May will begin with an initial intake of 100 unemployed engineering graduates.
240 hours spread across eight weeks will cover topics like basic and advanced Maths, basics of business, and overview of tech elements, soft skills among others.
The well-planned curriculum imparts additional training and improves management, communication skills, corporate ethics, value education, training in IT, managerial exercises through integrated time test approaches.
Vinay Kumar told Express that trained experts during the course will encourage creativity, develop multi-disciplinary skills and inculcate them with all-round capabilities to help them play a pivotal role at crunch situations in any institution.
NITK Director Prof Sandeep Sancheti had convened a meeting recently to ensure that the pilot project completes successfully without any hitches. The Institution will shortly solicit applications for Finishing School from unemployable engineers in Karnataka. The students will be shortlisted based on their marks.
‘The course anywhere will cost around Rs 40,000,” Vinay Kumar informs and adds that they were collecting a small fee of Rs 5,000 as infrastructure in the premises were idling with students being busy with examinations.
“The Finishing School in the end will offer suitable candidates to IT Industry,” Vinay Kumar adds.
