Mangaluru, May 9: In today’s world, we face a lot difficulties pertaining to which career to choose, what work to do etc. but what about our moral decisions? These are equally important than our other decisions in life. Especially at a young age during our peak teens when we are confused between right and wrong, we need a moral guide to correct us when we go wrong.
Holistic development of an individual is incomplete if moral values are neglected. Recent increase in the number of assault cases and increasing number of old age homes are pointing fingers towards wrong in the society and its mindset.
Most of the people do not have any respect for elders and females, speaking lies has become their habit and there is corruption and jealousy everywhere depleting the much desired moral values.
But what are the moral values? Experts do believe that lack of moral value is the major cause of unrest and deteriorating condition of India. Restlessness among youth is the major cause of crime. Openness, easy access to unwanted elements and lack of self-control are becoming bad components of our society. Youth must be directed and shown a right path.
Keeping this dilemma in mind 3 authors viz Ananth Prabhu G, Colin D'souza and Rajat Bijur got together and compiled a book for students in the PUC titled 'Ethical Considerations' which touches upon various topics in a teenagers life. There are 2 parts of this book- Part 1 for first year PU students and Part 2 for second year PU students.
Teen age comprises of intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development. Teenage, as all say, is the best phase in one’s life! It brings with it a lot of cheer, enthusiasm, fun and excitement. As the teenager ushers into all things new, she/he encounters a lot of ‘firsts’.
Like every coin with two sides, this wonderful phase comes with a lot of challenges too. Teenage is a time that is filled with confusion and small matters seem really big. Teenagers will often argue with their parents, usually as a result of the fast and intense cognitive and physical changes they are experiencing. Some of the common teenage problems reported by the parents are:
1. My teen is obsessed with electronic devices.
2. My teen is hostile to me.
3. My teen makes a big deal out of everything.
4. My teen tells lies.
5. My teen stays out late.
6. My teen chooses bad friends.
7. My teen experiments with sex.
8. My teen is using drugs.
“This book has been designed in a unique way so that the reader does not get bored,” said Ananth Prabhu. He added, “For every topic we have added a relevant real life story to give a clearer meaning and also introspective questions, where readers can ask themselves a few questions and gain moral clarifications.”

Teachers should work hard to bring the desired change in the society as they mold the future. Hence college education system must include moral and social values.
