Madikeri, Apr 4: A police officer and over 24 people were injured and nearly forty shops were ransacked in a communal clash at Virajpet here on Tuesday April 3.

Reports stated that two youth went to a telephone booth and asked for Re 1 coin to make a call. When the owner refused to give the coin the boys began to abuse the owner, who thrashed them.

The fight took a communal turn when members of both communities gathered in large numbers. In the pitched battle that followed several were injured and shops were damaged.

The situation was brought under control when four district armed reserve and two KSRP platoons were deployed. It is said that the circle inspector Gajendra Prasad and some policemen were hit with soda bottles during the clash.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed for 48 hours in the region.
