Mangalore: NRI Hostel among Ambitious Projects of Fr Muller Institutions

Mangalore, Apr 4: Carrying a legacy of 126 years, Fr Muller Charitable Hospital which is one of the oldest hospitals of the region is growing in leaps and bounds. Whether in establishment of educational institutions, modernizing wards and departments or in providing better infrastructural facilities, the hospital which is a household name in the coastal belt is at the threshold of a major expansion.


The Administrative Block*

Over the next five years an ambitious expansion project to the tune of Rs 100 crore has been planned.

NRI Hostel

An NRI hostel is on the cards which is a much-needed facility in the campus. This hostel is being planned after there was an increasing demand from NRIs for this facility. The medical college administration will soon set up the hostel which will provide individual rooms for both NRI boys and girls.

Speaking to Daijiworld, director of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions Fr Baptist Menezes said that the institution is keen on offering this facility as the number of NRI students has been increasing.

"The NRI students pay high fees and thus an NRI hostel facility catering to their needs becomes essential. It is an important need and further the institution too plans to generate some income through the accommodation facility," Fr Baptist said.

Dental and Pharmacy College

A dental college and pharmacy college is a dream of Fr Muller Institutions for the next five years. With the realization of this dream the Deemed to be University Status will be the next target. The institution will submit its papers to the competent authority in a week's time.

New Library Block

A new library block with centralized air conditioning will come up in the Fr Muller campus in Kankanady at a cost of Rs 4 crore. This building will be constructed in the place where the present Convent of Sisters of Charity stands. The Convent will be shifted to new premises in Kankanady.

Auditorium

Realizing the requirement of Fr Muller Institutions to have a well-equipped auditorium, the management has chalked out a project to the tune of Rs 6 crore. The centralized air-conditioned spacious auditorium will have state-of-the art communication equipment and will be constructed on the land near the Fr Muller stadium.

The 56,000 sq feet auditorium building will include mini halls and the main hall will have a seating capacity of 1,500 people.

Administrative Block

On the land of the Institution near Pumpwell, a new administrative block will be set up. The block will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2 crore. The block will house conference rooms, AV rooms and also guest rooms.


Convent of Sisters of Charity

Fr Muller Township

With over 1,500 non teaching staff, Fr Muller Institution has envisaged a mega township project. The township will come up in its land in Kulshekar and will also have a kindergarten and a crèche. Bus facility to other campuses in and around Mangalore city will also be arranged from the township.

Gymnasium

A gymnasium facility with indoor games and swimming pool for men and women is also another project which Fr Muller Institutions has taken up. The facility will be for the staff and students and the project cost is around Rs 3 to 4 crore.

New Campuses in DK and Udupi

Apart from the existing land in Deralakatte, Mullerkad and Kulshekar, the management has plans for aggressive expansion. Land measuring 10.5 acres has been acquired in Udupi for setting up of Fr Muller College of Nursing. A major expansion project has been the 300 acre land for Fr Muller Engineering College in Kota. The governing body of the institution has approved the project.

New Courses

New courses in Paramedicals will be started in Fr Muller Medical College. Courses in allied health sciences, food and nutrition, biotechnology, operation theatre technicians' course and course in Anaesthesia will also be started.

Oncology Department

One of the most ambitious projects has been the starting of the Oncology Department. This Rs 10 to 12 crore project will have a Linear Accelerator which is the ultimate in cancer treatment in the world. The department which will begin operation shortly has already obtained the equipment which is being installed in the hospital. With this, the best of cancer treatment will be available at Fr Muller Hospital.

The steady growth in the number and quality of educational institutions, a modernized multi-specialty hospital with the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities are no doubt the result of the vision and dream of the directors present and past. Nonetheless the charitable nature of the institutions has been given top priority by setting aside over 700 beds as free beds with free treatment for the poor and needy patients in the general wards of the Medical College Hospital. Such a free care facility amounts to Rs 3 crore annually.
