HYDERABAD, April 16: A non-resident Indian employed in Bahrain was arrested in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam on Monday, in connection with the death of his wife under suspicious circumstances.
Anil, who works as a computer programmer in a private firm in Bahrain, was arrested at the airport soon after he arrived with the body of his wife Mani Madhavi, who had died in Bahrain under suspicious circumstances four days ago.
Anil, who had married Madhavi in December 2005, was arrested on a complaint lodged by his in-laws with the police. They alleged that Anil, who had taken Madhavi to Bahrain two months ago, murdered her as he had relations with another woman there.
The techie, however, denied the allegation saying Madhavi died after falling in the bathroom. He claimed that the autopsy conducted on her proved that the death was caused by accident.
Madhavi's father Venkat Ramna alleged that Anil had earlier informed them over phone that she died of a heart attack.
He said though the marriage took place in 2005, Anil did not take her to Bahrain on the ground that he was hunting for another job.
"But we came to know from our friends in Bahrain that he had been staying with another woman for four years," he said.
Women's organisations are demanding justice for Madhavi. They said this is the latest in a series of incidents of NRI husbands ditching and murdering their wives.
