Singapore, June 10 (IANS): Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) officers have arrested 29 people in an inland operation around the city state, the ICA said on Wednesday.
Among those arrested, 26 were allegedly from China and India. They were aged between 26 and 62 years old. Most had overstayed in Singapore, Xinhua reported.
Of the other three, one work permit holder was caught for having duty-unpaid cigarettes and two others were arrested for allegedly harbouring offenders.
Under the Immigration Act, the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane. The penalties for illegal departure is a fine of up to S$2,000 (around $1,500), a jail term of up to six months, or both.
