Mangalore, Apr 22: The daily wage earners of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) will stage a protest against the act of handing over the street light management contract to a private party. The protest will be held on Sunday April 22.
Addressing the press persons Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangha (BMS) District President K Vishwanath Shetty said nearly 45 daily wage earners in the electricity department had gone jobless as their work had been handed over to the private sector.
In 1995-96 the Municipal staff Union affiliated to BMS had filed a petition in the High Court, requesting regularization of the contract labourers. But the court had asked the Union to consult the State Contract Labour Advisory Board. After studying the status of the posts the Board had clearly said that the posts are not temporary but permanent.
The Board had pointed out that the labours were not provided uniforms and certain allowances and facilities. Shetty said that contract labour system should be abolished from MCC.
Even though this was known to the Commissioner, Mayor and all the members of the Ruling Party nothing has been done to them.
HMS Secretary Gopal, Treaurer Prashanth, Naryan and Taniyappa were also present at the press meet.
