South Korea MERS cases rise to 179


Seoul, June 24 (IANS): Four fresh cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea, raising the total to 179, health ministry officials said on Wednesday.

No deaths have been reported for two straight days, leaving the toll at 27, according to Xinhua news agency.

At least 13 more patients were discharged from hospitals as they completely recovered from the infection, raising the total of those discharged to 67, while 85 MERS patients are still being treated.

The number of those quarantined increased from 2,805 on Tuesday to 3,103 on Wednesday.

The first case of MERS was spotted in Saudi Arabia in 2012.
