Islamabad, Jul 8 (IANS): The peace talks between Afghan officials and Taliban representatives ended on Wednesday, media reported.

Officials of the Afghanistan Peace and Reintegration Programme held the peace dialogue with Taliban representatives in their first official face-to-face discussions which ended Wednesday morning.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is in Oslo, lauded the peace talks.

Sharif said the talks were a "major breakthrough".

"I hope there will be a positive outcome which will certainly be very helpful for peace and stability in Afghanistan," The Nation quoted Sharif as saying.

"...we should make sure that nobody tries to derail this process as it is not only the obligation of Afghanistan, Pakistan and other parties, but also the obligation of international community," he added.

The high-powered Afghan delegation has been in Islamabad for the last three days on a previously unannounced invitation for talks with the Taliban.
