Mangalore, May 14: Ullal assembly constituency is gearing up for the interim polls to be held on Saturday June 2.  Major political parties are busy chalking out strategies for establish their supremacy in the Congress fortress.

While Congress and BJP did not have much difficulty in choosing their candidates, JD (S) is yet to finalize about their candidate.  Though there were rumours that owing to coalition set up in the state, JD (S) would not contest in the elections, now it is almost clear that JD (S) is all set to have their own candidate.

BJP, Congress and CPM candidates submitted their nominations amidst high-drama by Congress activists on Monday April 14 morning.

Congress candidate U T Khader who is also the son of former MLA U T Fareed arrived at the deputy commissioner's office accompanied by former ministers Ramanath Rai,  Sageer Ahmad, MLC Blasius D'Souza, Kallige Taranath Shetty, Manjunath Bhandari, Sadanand Poonja, youth Congress leader Bondala Jagannath Shetty, Mamata Gatti, DCCI vice-president Ivan D'Souza and others.

His arrival marked a bit of confusion which in turn paved way for commotion at deputy commissioner's office.  Since only 5 persons were allowed to accompany the candidate, the Congress activists demanded that more should be allowed.  This created commotion on the spot.  However, the situation was brought under control by police quite immediately.

BJP Candidate Chandrashekhar Uchil was accompanied by BJP state president D V Sadanand Gowda, district-in-charge minister B Nagaraj Shetty, MLAs Krishna Palemar, Yogish Bhat, Padmanabh Kottari, Shakuntala Shetty, BJP district president Monappa Bhandary, Anwar Manippadi and hundreds of party activists.

CPM candidate Ramchandra Uchil who has been maintaining a low profile was accompanied by B Madhav, B N Shreeyan and Yadav Shetty.

Speaking to the media U T Khader said that he has now strong competition this time around and that Congress would win by all means.  At the same time Chandrashekhar Uchil said that Muslim votes will be divided between JD (S) and Congress which will be beneficial for BJP.  Meanwhile Ramchandra Uchil was of the opinion that he would surely be able to give strong fight to major parties and there are chances of an outright win too.

Ullal is now all set for political circus with some of the top BJP as well as Congress leaders set to campaign in the constituency in the coming days. History says that nothing can be predicted at Ullal though U T Khadar does enjoy a slight advantage over other candidates as he had been prepared quite well by his father U T Fareed.  But Chandrashekhar Uchil had almost managed a victory in the last election before bowing out with a small margin.
