Belagavi, Aug 13: A 19-year-old girl, who was alone at home, succeeded in beating five robbers black and blue and made them to scurry for cover, by boldly facing them. The incident occurred on Wednesday August 12 afternoon at Bavana Saudatti villager in Raibag taluk of the district.

A gang of robbers entered the house of Annappa Patil in the said village at around 12 pm on Wednesday in the guise of visitors to the village seeking some drinking water. Initially, two persons came in and asked Surekha Patil (19), who was alone at home then, for water in Hindi. The girl, growing suspicious, wanted to know which place they belong to. At this, all the other four robbers barged into the house, and threatened Surekha, forcing her to part with her golden ear lobes. Surekha then kicked the robbers, pushed them with hands, and rushed into the kitchen.

When the robbers followed her into the house, Surekha suddenly sprayed chilly powder into their eyes. The powder entered the eyes of three among them. She then took into hand a stick and began hitting the robbers with it. While two people ran away at this sudden retaliation, the robber who had taken away her ear lobes got stuck inside. Surekha, who beat him up badly, snatched away her ear lobes. By the time she gathered locals together, the robbers fled by running through nearby sugarcane fields.

The villagers, who came together in front of Surekha's home thereafter, heaped lavish praise on her for her bravery and presence of mind.
