Karkala, Aug 15: A woman who fell into a well while chasing monkeys was rescued after about 18 hours on Friday August 14.The incident took place at Koppala near Sachirepete in the taluk.
On Thursday August 13, Shivani, an unmarried woman who lives alone in her house went out to chase away monkeys that were on a coconut tree near her house. With her eyes on the coconut tree, she failed to notice a well and accidentally fell into it.
The only thing she could reach was the pipe of the water pump. She cried for help holding the pipe, but she could not come up and nobody did hear her shouts.
The high water level in the well and continuous rains added to her misery. Yet, the brave lady waited, praying and hanging on to dear life. About 18 hours later, help finally arrived in the form of Sheikh Sanaulla, her neighbour.
It is said that Sanaulla had seen a cow belonging to Shivani on Thursday evening. She had tied the cow for grazing, but she did not come back to take the cow, he took it away to his place for safekeeping. However, as Shivani did not turn up the next day too, he grew suspicious and came to her house to check. When she was not found, he started searching. He then looked into the well, and to his suprise, found Shivani holding the pipe. Shivani was then rescued.
It is said that Shivani was suffering from some psychological problems earlier but had recovered. The locals appreciated Sanaulla for his alertness and good deed.
