Mangaluru, Aug 15: In a stunning display, patriotic spirit draped Mangaluru city on Saturday, August 15, as over a 1,000 students belonging to educational institutions run by Saraswat Education Society held up a 305-mt long Tricolour to mark the 69th Independence Day.
Students from Ganapathy PU College, Ganapathy English Medium School, Anandashram High School and Parijnan PU college under the banner of Saraswat Education Society gathered early morning at GHS Road junction and lined up for the unique event.
Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim unfurled the Tricolour and symbolically inaugurated the event.
The 305-mt long flag unfurled from the Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple road to Hampankatta. A procession of youngsters dressed in traditional attires and depicting famous figures led by 'Mother India' added more colour to the event.
Addressing the gathering, A B Ibrahim said, "Independence Day is celebrated throughout the country with various programmes, but this programme of unfurling a 305-mt long Tricolour is truly unique."
Executive officer A S Ramachandra Rao, speaking to media said that this programme is dedicated to the memory of freedom fighters and brave soldiers who sacrificed everything for the sake of the nation, patriotic citizens and people who are involved in the protection and security of the country. The special flag was prepared by a Hyderabad-based company.
Praveen P Kadle, vice-president of Saraswat Education Society, Mahesh L Bondel, secretary and others were present on the occasion.
