Mangaluru, Aug 15: In a stunning display, patriotic spirit draped Mangaluru city on Saturday, August 15, as over a 1,000 students belonging to educational institutions run by Saraswat Education Society held up a 305-mt long Tricolour to mark the 69th Independence Day.

Students from Ganapathy PU College, Ganapathy English Medium School, Anandashram High School and Parijnan PU college under the banner of Saraswat Education Society gathered early morning at GHS Road junction and lined up for the unique event.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim unfurled the Tricolour and symbolically inaugurated the event.

The 305-mt long flag unfurled from the Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple road to Hampankatta. A procession of youngsters dressed in traditional attires and depicting famous figures led by 'Mother India' added more colour to the event.

Addressing the gathering, A B Ibrahim said, "Independence Day is celebrated throughout the country with various programmes, but this programme of unfurling a 305-mt long Tricolour is truly unique."

Executive officer A S Ramachandra Rao, speaking to media said that this programme is dedicated to the memory of freedom fighters and brave soldiers who sacrificed everything for the sake of the nation, patriotic citizens and people who are involved in the protection and security of the country. The special flag was prepared by a Hyderabad-based company.

Waste of money & waste of time. Instead of spent money for such kind of mega tricolour cloth barricade, they could have given free cloth materials for poor children in the name of Independence Day celebration. I will object this kind of mega show nothing but just for publicity purpose. Who has given this idea to them, will be awarded for Bharat Ratna...

How can it be called a flag when there are set sizes and material to be used as per the laws regarding the same. The flag code has strict specifications which have not been followed in this case.

Mera Bharat Mahan.... Independence day is mainly celebrated by students and no doubt they are our future hope. When these kids grow up I hope India will be a developed country, when we look at the learning and scoring high spirit of present students. Village and city students are equally conscious of the importance of education and career as their future is written in getting quality education.
