Udupi, Jun 21: As torrential rains continue causing havoc all along the coastal belt, raging waves are spoiling the sleep of people living along the shores. Though this has not been a new phenomenon, it is also true that no permanent solution has so far been found.
The mighty waves have continued their rage and engulfed land and houses along the coastal belt in the district too. Several houses have been damaged at Polipu near Kaup, Uliyargoli, Kaipunjalu, Mattu, Pitrody and Padukere. More than 10 houses are facing threat of being washed away.
Along with this several coconut trees have already been engulfed by the waves while several others are on the verge of being washed away. Even the road running along the shore in these places is facing a severe threat for existence.
Tahsildar Muralidhar, fisheries department engineer Narayanappa, taluk panchayat members Jagdish and Ramesh Hegde, district fishermen's forum coordinator Vijay Karkera, revenue inspector Satyanand Shetty, personal assistant of Kaup MLA Krishnaraj visited the affected areas and took stock of the existing situation.
Meanwhile, Tahsildar, has suggested the deputy commissioners to lay boulders along the shore to curb sea erosion. Kaup MLA Lalaji R.Mendon who is away in Bangalore has contacted deputy commissioner and district-in-charge minister over the phone to coordinate the efforts in undertaking relief measures.
