Sullia, Aug 27: The students of a college here got agitated after the news that a girl student of the college had been led to a cyber cafe by a male student of the college but belonging to another religion, spread. After the students gathered together and tried to stage a protest, policemen intervened and dispersed the crowd by resorting to caning. The incident occurred near the government PU college here on Wednesday August 26.
On Wednesday, rumour that a male student of the college had escorted a girl student of the college belonging to another community to a cyber cafe, spread like wild fire. The situation turned tense as a result. A group of students approached the principal and insisted on debarring the male student involved with this incident.
In the meantime, the accused student had been seated in a separate room, and students started gathering outside that room. Policemen arrived on the spot and ordered the students to go away.
The student in question was then taken to police station in a jeep. At that time, the students blocked movement of the jeep by placing stones across its path. The police personnel then wielded canes to disperse students who had come together in the playground of the college.
The accused was interrogated at the police station. College principal and crime sub-inspector of police, Sanjay Kallur, questioned the student relating to the incident.
