Udupi, Aug 27: Fifteen days ago, this young couple hailing from Gadag wanted to commit suicide, as their families would not let them get married. But things took a happy turn, and instead of dying, they entered into a new life of togetherness on Thursday August 27, thanks to the timely intervention of a social worker.
Basava (25) and Lalitha (20) hailing from Gadag had been in love for the past one year. Basava had settled in Udupi some years ago and was working here, while Lalitha stayed in Gadag.
It is learnt that though belong to the same caste, their families opposed their union, and girl's family fixed her marriage with another boy.
Distressed with the development, Lalitha left her home and came to Ambalpady 15 days ago. Basava had told her where to find him.
The lovers, who were highly depressed, decided to end their lives and even bought poison for the purpose, but Basava's employer intervened in time and informed the matter to social worker Vishu Shetty.
Vishu Shetty then convinced the couple not to take the extreme step and spoke to their families, and after almost two weeks of discussions, the families finally gave their consent.
Vishu Shetty himself took the responsibility of getting the couple married and even bore the entire cost. The marriage was solemnised as per customs at a house near Moodubetttu school.
The parents of the boy were present for the wedding and gave their blessings. The girl's mother, however, stayed away.
In the end, all turned out well, and two young lives were not only saved, but even got a whole new beginning.
