Udupi, Jun 23: Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti plans intensify its protest against setting up of the coal-based Nagarjuna Power project at Yellur, said president of the executive committee Vijaykumar Hegde here on Friday June 22.
Addressing press persons he said a delegation from the Samiti will meet minister for medical education and district in-charge V S Acharya and will tell him that this project is not necessary to a sensitive place like Yellur. The minister will be made aware of the illegal activities that are taking place in the name of the project, he said.
Samiti will demand serious action to be taken against such officials, and a petition would be collected from one lac people against the project. This petition will be submitted to the state government and a complaint will be lodged against the cutting of trees at the project area, Hegde said.
Former MP Vinaykumar Sorake said a delegation from Dakshina Kannada and from Udupi will go to Bangalore to make the government aware of the intensity of the oppositions to the project. An awareness programme will be held among the villagers about the project and its effect on the coastal districts, he said.
