Mangaluru: Auto drivers condemn assaults, threaten to stop operating

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Aug 31: Several auto rickshaw drivers from various unions on Monday August 31 marched in protest from Light House Hill to State Bank, condemning the recent incidents of murder and assaults on auto drivers.

The protest was organized by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Auto Rickshaw Division along with various other organizations here.

Addressing the protest, Ali Hassan, president of Minority Auto Rickshaw Drivers' and Owners' Association said, "If the police department or the administration does not take severe action against the accused, auto rickshaw drivers will not operate from 7 pm every evening.

"Though auto drivers are providing public service, their lives are insecure. If the police department fails to take action against the accused we will not tolerate anymore and all auto drivers will stop running their rickshaws in the city," he warned.

President of HMS Auto Rickshaw Union said, "Attacks and murders have increased over the last 15 years. Auto drivers are the easy targets in many of the incidents. The administration should install CCTVs in auto parkings and prominent places. We demand that the police arrest the miscreants behind the attack on auto driver at Attavar recently."

Alphonse D'Souza said, "We condemn the assault on the auto driver Gurudath which recently took place at Attavar. Police should immediately arrest the culprits. Install CCTVs in the city to prevent such incidents."

Hamza of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Rickshaw Division said that 'auto drivers are like soldiers'.

He also slammed MLA J R Lobo and MLC Ivan D'Souza and said, "Why is J R Lobo silent on the issue of assault on auto drivers? He and Ivan D'Souza should understand the problems of drivers and show some sympathy. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and district incharge minister B Ramanath Rai too should try to understand problems of auto drivers."

    Shettre,
Not only Bar & Restaurants, people from all walks of life like students, patients and white collar job holders, outsiders will be affected if strike continues for a longer period. Some people live quite away from bust stop on the main road and due to old age may need Auto to reach their residence. Inconvenience to public would be beyond imagination. Let us hope that police department will look into the matter and listen to their grievances and work out proper solution at the earliest.

You are right. This is a good move. The cameras cannot differentiate and can capture the harassment/attacks by the rickshaw drivers also. Win-Win situation :)

Just go to Auto stands in Central Railway station, Mlore Junction Railway station or KSRTC bus stand.. You will find out how sincere public service is rendered by these drivers. When the early morning buses arrive, they hound the passengers like wolves and discuss about the fare only after all the luggage is put inside the vehicle.
And their rear view mirrors are pointed direct to the passenger rather than the road!
Exceptions are there in every profession.

It looks like even if a wife attack her husband, people are blaming J.R. Lobo for law and order. When did Mr.Lobo become Police Chief?

If Auto drivers feel unsafe after 7PM it is recommended they stop operating. There are call cabs available in Mangalore which are cheaper than Autos night fare.

Always remember that if a person loved you once, even after a hundred years there will still be some of that love left. no matter how much that person denies it

Indeed Auto drivers render excellent service to the people in Mangalore. However they cannot condemn The Police Department for any lapse on their part. Cases like these cannot detected and the guilty punished overnight. It takes time and effort to resolve these problems. Again the names of the politicians like J.R. Lobo and Ivan D'Souza have been mentioned. Is this fair? It is a question of time before the truth comes to light. By suspending operation of rickshaws no good will be done to any one. Hope better discretion prevails.

I really respect sincere auto drivers. Their job is that of a nobel vocation. Try to imagine just a week without them?

Appropriate measures should be taken for their safety and welfare since they work late into the night and are target to violence at times.
