Kundapur, Jun 27: Wednesday June 27 could be termed as historical day in the annals of Kundapur as thousands of people gathered at Shastri Circle here in support of humanity and in protesting the communal forces which are bent to destroying the secular fabric of the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada. The protest organized by like-minded organizations from undivided district of Dakshina Kannada witnessed a sea of people thronging in support of Fr Sylvester Pereira.
It was not only the gathering of Christians but even Hindu and Muslim brethren gathered in huge number in order to express their solidarity. It was a spontaneous protest rally where an aggressive assault on five innocent people including a priest was condemned.
Pro Rajsheker urged the Government of the day to invoke Goonda Act and arrest culprits while Shanker of CPI (M) warned the anti-social elements not to indulge in such inhuman activates and that a day would come when they would be taught the same lesson by the society at large.
Congress leader and MLC K Prathapchandra Shetty pointed out that Ramanna Shetty was involved in many assault cases and that it was time that he was immediately arrested under Goonda Act and sent to Bellary Jail.
He criticized the Udupi district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya and said that he was eloquent in his silence.
Kundapur Vicar forane Fr Antony Lobo presided over the function. Advocate Ivan D’Souza compered the protest meet.
Local leaders I M Jayaram Shetty, Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary, K Shankar of CPI (M), Rajashekhar of Human Rights Organization, Edwin Crasta, Jyoti Putran, Udupi Zilla Panchayat vice-president Sharada Bijur, Udupi district Congress president M A Gafur, Shyamala Bhandary, ex-MLC Winifred Fernandes, Zilla Panchayat member Gerald Fernandes, Lancy D’Cunha, president of Catholic Sabha, Vicar General of the Diocese Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, Jacob D’Souza and others were present at the protest meet.
Agitators had come not only from Kundapur and surrounding areas but even from Mangalore, Kinnigoly, Udupi and other areas.
In all it was a peaceful yet successful protest though it was organized within a few hours. Youth led by Konkani Yuva Awaz and other organizations such as Catholic Sabha once again proved to be a vital link in organizing this mammoth protest.

Kundapur, Jun 27: More than 5 thousand people have gathered near Shastri Circle here to protest against the attack on Carmelite priest Fr Sylvester Pereira on Wednesday June 27 at 3 pm.
Not only Christians, but also Hindus and Muslims are part of the huge gathering here in a large number to show unity against communalism.
Addressing the crowd, former MP Vinaykumar Sorake said that Indian constitution has given equal rights to the all citizens. But, Sangh Parivar people are taking the law into their hands. The BJP-JD(S)-led state government is sponsoring these anti-social elements, he blamed.
The coastal area of the state has become the laboratory of Sangh Parivar people. On the other hand, the police department here has completely failed in maintaining peace and order in the coastal area, he accused.

Kundapur parish priest Fr Antony Lobo explained the purpose of the protest.
