Bantwal, Sep 5: A team of policemen comprising personnel from the local police station as well as Vittal and district crime intelligence bureau has achieved major breakthrough in the case of murder of a youth and inflicting of serious injuries on two others at Kanyana in the taluk on August 30. Two assailants were arrested and the car as well as weapons used in the said attack were seized from Salethur in the taluk on Friday September 4.
A gang which reportedly arrived from Paivalike in Kasargod district had planned to attack a five-member gang from Paivalike that had come to attend a marriage function at Kanyana. Two had succeeded in escaping, while one of the members of was the rival gang had been hacked to death, while two others had suffered serious injuries in this attack. It is said that after the split in the Paivalike gang, Asif and Riaz had made an attempt on the life of Zia from Paivalike a year back, and Nappate Rafiq, who is a staunch associate of Zia, planned to take on the rival gang because the enmity arising out of this act.
The arrested men are Rafiq alias Nappate Rafiq alias Muhammed Rafiq (26) from Attegoli in Kayyara village, Uppala, and Paddu alias Padmanabha (24) from Bayikatte in Paivalike, who was driving the car that was carrying the attackers. The police personnel have found that the attack was the result of rivalry between two splinter gangs arising out of split that happened over a year back. The arrests were made on the basis of information furnished by Ikku alias Muhammed Iqbal Poyyagadde, who was arrested on the allegation of helping the gang to flee in his auto rickshaw after the crime, as the car of the attackers had developed snags.

The operation was conducted by police circle inspector here, K U Belliappa under the guidance of district superintendent of police, Dr S D Sharanappa, additional superintendent of police, Vincent Shantakumar, and assistant superintendent of police here, Rahul Kumar. Rural police station house officer, Rakshit A K, Vittal station house officer, Prakash Devadiga, assistant sub-inspector, Anand Poojary, and several other personnel had taken part in the raid.
Case has been registered against the murderers, and also those who provided shelter to gang members and helped them to escape from law. It is said that almost all of them are fearing for their lives.
Arrested Nappate Rafiq has been facing a number of cases like murder, robbery, abduction, theft, cheating, etc in different police stations in Kasargod district as well as Bantwal, Puttur, and Madikeri taluks, and that he has succeeded in getting bail in all of them.
