Elderly Sikh-American brutally assaulted in US

New York, Sep 10 (PTI): An elderly Sikh-American man was brutally injured and called "terrorist" and "Bin Laden" in an apparent hate crime case in Chicago, just days before the US commemorates the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Inderjit Singh Mukker was assaulted on Tuesday when the assailant pulled up to his car yelling racial slurs, including, "Terrorist, go back to your country, Bin Laden!"

Mukker, a US citizen and father of two, was on his way to a grocery store and was repeatedly cut off by a driver. He pulled over to the side of the road to let him pass but the driver instead pulled in front of his car and aggressively approached Mukker's vehicle, according to information by the Sikh Coalition, a community-based organisation said.

The assailant then reached into the car and repeatedly punched Mukker in the face, causing him to lose consciousness, bleed profusely and suffer a fractured cheekbone and a laceration to his cheek.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he received six stitches, treatment for lacerations, bruising and swelling. The suspect is in custody. "No American should be afraid to practise their faith in our country," Mukker said.

"I'm thankful for the authorities' swift response to apprehend the individual but without this being fully investigated as a hate crime, we risk ignoring the horrific pattern of intolerance, abuse and violence that Sikhs and other minority communities in this country continue to face."

The Sikh Coalition's Legal Director Harsimran Kaur said the group believes that Mukker was "targeted and assaulted because of his Sikh religious appearance, race or national origin."

"We request an immediate investigation and call on local and federal agencies to investigate this attack as a hate crime," Kaur said.

Sikh Coalition said the attack, on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary, is just the latest in a line of violent attacks on Sikhs in America.

Last August, Sandeep Singh, a Sikh father in New York City, was run over and dragged 30 feet after being called a "terrorist."

In 2012, a gunman walked into a Sikh house of worship and shot and killed six innocent Sikh victims in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.

When we have brutal gang rapes and communal fights happening everyday in india, indian media should not highlight this incident thinking that Indian pride has been hurt in US....afterall, this sikh man is american (he is not indian passport holder), and therefore americans will deal with the racist perpetrator who brutalized and punched him. As he is not an indian citizen, he will not come to indian embassy for help to take up the issue internationally with US authorities, and therefore FBI or the local chicago police dept will handle this issue and sent the perpetrator to jail for brutalizing the american sikh.

This may be one in a million incidents because of Sikhs way of dressing and the beard.
I heard that even Sikh community has lots of restrictions to enter/secure jobs in Saudi Arabia.
Mistaken identity on the basis of attire worn by a person.
One who wears Shalvar/kameez not necessarily is an Indian.

With a Hindu majority India will always be largely a religiously tolerant nation.
However, if we allow our governments to be run on the advice of the RSS and other Parivar groups we cannot be sure of religious tolerance anymore. This is a reality !

Dear Hindus are thought "Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava" and not religious tolarent. This religious tolarent is Christian belief. RSS never preach religious stuffs and is not religious fanatical organisations. It never involved in religious conversion project.

Religious tolerance is the need of any secular democratic society and not a 'Christian belief' as such. Christianity has 'open arms' for any human being without discrimination with the message of love, peace and brotherhood being the central theme. I do not want to get into more details here. To accept or not accept is left up to the individual. Any coercion or allurement with a vested interest is not Christian conduct.

US people need to understand the difference between a terrorist and a Sikh ...just because Sikhs wear turban and keep long beards these stupid Americans get confused and evey Sikh looks like bin laden to them ..they need more education ...I understand their anger against terrorists ...due to some factions someone else has to bear the brunt of their wrong doings.

This is pure act of BIGOTRY. Thank God at least the US Government does not turn a blind eye to acts of bigotry.
Is our central government here lenient or turns a blind eye towards acts and utterances of bigotry ? Something for us to ponder over.
