Mangaluru, Sep 10: The All-College Students' Association has called for a district-wide college bandh on September 19 in protest against the controversial Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday September 10, state legal advisor of the association Dinakar Shetty said, "The All-College Students' Association will observe a bandh on September 19 to demand the scrapping of Yettinahole project and also urge the elected representatives to respond to the demands of the district."

He said that 95 colleges from Dakshina Kannada will observe the bandh and join the protest. At 10 am on September 19, a rally will be taken from Ambedkar circle to DC's office where the protest meet will be held.

Criticizing former chief ministers Dr Veerappa Moily and D V Sadananda Gowda, he said people of the district will 'never forgive them'.

Slamming MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, he said in a sarcastic note, "Nalin Kumar Kateel said he has written a letter to union minister for water resources Uma Bharti requesting her to drop the project. By the time the letter reaches her and she reads, the project would be complete."

"A common man has to follow all rules and regulations, but this project worth 13,000 crore has been started illegally," he added.

"All people irrespective of religion, caste and community should support this protest," he urged.

He also the said the students' association will support the national highway bandh on September 15 called by Netravati Nadi Ulisi Horata Samiti and will take part in the protest. "We will also support Netravati Samrakshana Samiti in the 10 questions it has posed to MLAs and ministers of this region," Dinakar Shetty added.

Asked if the association had taken permission from the police to hold the bandh, he said, "We have not take permission yet. The association will take responsibility if anything goes wrong."

He also said that the students has planned a 'show of strength' on September 26.

"If political parties cannot drop this project, they should resign," he said.

Rohini, president of All-College Students' Association, Prabith Kumar, executive president, Samarth Rai, president of All-College Students' Association Mangaluru taluk and others were present.

I oppose this yetthinahole project. This is detrimental to Dakshina Kannada. Let all the MLA's and the lone MP of DK fight to get more Industrial projects to DK distinct.Let there be more productive activity so that our finished product in Engineering Medicine Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and other Degree courses get sufficient jobs. Let there be dams built on the rivers that are there. Let not the MLA's think of losing their chairs if they oppose this project. But the students should not observe bundh and disrupt the full day's work rather have protest from 3pm to 6pm for which may citizens will join. But i for one will always oppose this Yehtinahole project.

Dear students you explain pros and cons of the project to the people of this district. If it is no way afeect ecology,or water problem to D.K. district then there is no need to protest.Even the implementation of the project should be with strict agreement conditions protecting present and future needs of water of the district for all purpose.Still we are given piece meal information of the project. If we understood the project and protest then your action and strength is highly appreciable. You convince the people and make your ambition in safeguarding the interest of D.K. people grand success. Donot become pray of politics, money and influence. You work still it reaches logical end. Earlier protest failed either to protect the interest of D.K. or gain some thing out of the project either in electriciy or gas at reduced rate etc.All the best

Proud of all Students. As students We enjoyed Nethravathi River for Swimming,Fishing,Boating and all other benefits. And still enjoying the Benefits of it at age 70. Nature created this River for benefit of the Area. You Youngsters are the beneficiaries of this River and fight for it so you along with your family and friends get benefit of River Nethravathi.
Also try to investigate how the project started secretly and who made fortune out of it. Curse of nature will be on them.

My opinion is that hardly 0.1% of students would genuinely take part in the protest. Rest would enjoy the latest film that gets released. Thus academics does take a hit.

Outsiders feel Dakshina Kannada is having excess water resources. I too personally feel it is true. This is because there is no much development in this region except few industries like MRPL etc., There are no Dams constructed and no much agricultural activities here and all the rain water is finally flow into Arabian Sea. Youngsters move to cities like Bangalore, Mumbai and abroad after their education for employment opportunities. After all this project water is supplied within Karnataka for farming and other purposes which ultimately result in development of this state. I feel student unions should debate this issue and study all the pro and cons before getting on the streets.

This is totally unacceptable calling students for your political advantage. Let it be any party asking students to support shows that party's greedy ambitions without giving a slightest thought to the future generation at this tender age. This should be condemned on all forms and a law should be in force to prohibit students from taking part in any political rally or any other issues out on the streets publicly. No using students for any outsider call.

I think Nobody trusts the Indian Environmental Audit Agencies. There should be an Audit on Pros and cons of this project and must be published in Papers. Anyways, If they give 13,000 crores to Banaglore Lake Rejuvenation, The Cauvery Water ment for Bangalore can be supplied to Tumkur and Kolar, Then no need of the Yettinhole project.

A minimum water level in river netravathi could be maintained by closure of shutters of the dam in diversion canal. It will not be a difficult or costly matter. But just remember what has happened in Japan today from flooding. Over a million people had to be evacuated from their homes . In the past, south canara too had periods of flooding during monsoon.Let excess water in netravati be of some help elsewhere. Certainly people of S.Canara should not be deprived of adequate water supply through out the year. But let us not waste our working days by strikes and bandhs. .!

Hi... good to see new initiatives to scrap the project. Yes, irrespective religion, party, sector, profession... across above we need to fight this battle. All the political leaders are escaping. how dare Sadananda Gowda to give such a statement, that also being from this place and standing in this place he is commenting project will be executed. how dare he. How dare Moily giving statements as what ever be the cost, this project will be executed. how dare these people. We are stupid to allow them to enter our district and city. Lets have this also in the agenda to boycott both Sadananda Gowda and Moily entering our districts. Let them settle at the place where they are expecting huge vote bank if project is completed. Coming back to the subject, let's all join and make this fight a successful one scraping the project.

Students mind is adulterated, poisoned, biased bcz they are turned into political whereas they should have more focused on studies by remaining apolitical. What are the duties of students and what are they suppose to do? Students have the right to protest against anything that is related to studies/careers. Students may not be in a position to take independent stand bcz they might not have gotten broad picture of any social issue. They are learning to come to come to any sort of conclusions. Protest by students might be bit premature. Most of student organisations have nonstudent entities
