Mangaluru, Sep 10: “Mangalore Bar Association (R) will hold 'Five districts regional advocates' convention' on September 26 at TMA Pai International Convention Hall”, informed SP Chengappa, president of Mangalore Bar Association here on Thursday September 10.

He was addressing the press at Court building here and informed about the convention.

Speaking further, he said, “HL Dattu, honourable chief justice of India will inaugurate the convention at 10:30 am. Chief justice of Karnataka High Court Subro Kamal Mukharaji will preside over the function. AN Venugopal Gowda, justice of Karnataka High Court, state minister for law T B Jayachandra, advocate general Ravi Varma Kumar will be present on the occasion”.

“Senior most advocates like Udaya Holla, Sajan Poovayya and ASN Hebbar will deliver key note address on various issues pertaining to laws in the convention”.

“Union minister, DV Sadananda Gowda, high court retired judge HL Nagamohan Das, Karnataka additional advocate general AS Ponanna and others will take part during the occasion of valedictory function which will be held around 5:00 pm on the day of convention”.

“During this convention, we will also demand to establish the Circuit Bench of the Karnataka High Court at Mangaluru. Compared to the other places in the state, Mangaluru has the highest number of cases which are referred to the High Court. But the poor people cannot easily afford the legal service hence for the convenience of poor and easy accessibility of legal service, we are demanding Circuit High Court Bench in Mangaluru”, he added.

He further informed, “State government provides stipend of Rs 1,000 per month to advocates as soon as they finish the degree in law and practise for the first year. This has to be increased from 1,000 to 3,000 for the first three years. Many people who come out after the degrees in laws are shifting to other profession which is a concern; hence government should support the advocates. Further, government should remove the minimum annual income of Rs 40,000 in this stipend application”.

He also said that Mangalore Bar Association will support the protest against Yettinahole Project and is ready to provide any kind of legal service. “Soon after this convention, we will also hold meeting to discuss how to involve in this struggle. From behalf of Mangalore Bar Association, they will submit a memorandum against Yettinahole project to Union minister DV Sadananda Gowda during the convention. Yettinahole project is going to affect agriculture and create water scarcity in the district”.

A letter will be written against this project and sent to all the representatives, CM Siddaramaiah and various ministers.
