Bantwal, Sep 12: The police on Saturday September 12 arrested the Veda teacher who was caught on camera thrashing and abusing a boy with a fractured arm.
The accused, Shyam Sunder Shastri (43), a resident of Urimajalu surrendered himself to Vittal police on Saturday, after which he was arrested.
The video showing Shastri beating a boy with a fractured arm, aged around 10 years, had gone viral on WhatsApp and other social media. Though the incident took place in May this year, it came to light only earlier this week, after the video was uploaded on social media.
The incident took place at a Veda camp organized in Vittal temple. The video also shows Shastri asking the boy in an angry tone if he was a 'Brahmana' or a 'Kshatriya'.
Taking serious note of the case, B K Sesappa, leader from Vittal Dalit Seva Samiti had filed a complaint urging the Vittal police to investigate the matter and take strict action against Shastri.
Soon after the police registered the case, Shastri absconded and the police began a search for him.
Vittal Dalit Seva Samiti, CITU and SFI staged a protest meet on Friday September 11.
On Saturday, Shyam Sunder Shastri appeared in Vittal police station accompanied by his lawyer, after which he was arrested. Soon, he was released on bail.
The incident garnered attention of the national media too.
