Mangaluru: Prices of flowers, sugarcane skyrocket in city outskirts

Mangaluru, Sep 18: People celebrating ‘Ganeshotsava’ festivities were in for a mild jolt when they heard the prices of essential festival items such as flowers and sugarcane. Some traders at Thokkottu junction were found selling the items at exorbitant prices.





One ‘Katte’ of long jasmine flowers was priced at Rs 80 and a stick of sugarcane was priced at Rs 250. Traders from outside the district sold the items without room for any bargaining. Traders were seen selling flowers brought from their hometown alongside the national highway. While jasmine is being sold in Mangaluru at prices between Rs 40 and Rs 50, these were sold near Thokkottu for Rs 80 and crossed Rs 100 in the interior area. Though Sugar cane was being sold for Rs 250, the people had no choice but to pay the price.

Locals said that the traders are taking undue advantage of the festival to fleece the poor. They said that the shopkeepers are paying shop rent and tax to the municipality but traders coming from outside the district made them incur losses.

    "Supply and demand" will be applicable to anything and everything for buying and selling in India. Specially, when it comes to food products, agri products including flowers have a great deal to do with the supply of water. Due to uncertainty of rain each and every crop including flowers will be impacted.

    This will also apply to sugar and all the sweets that we lavishly produce and consume in India during the Divali season. "Want not waste not" is the best policy that need be adhered to because the mother nature has a message for all of us.

    During our school day, a sugar cane stick would cost Two rupees at the most. Each stick was normally cut into four small pieces that were costing two annas each. Obviously, even the sugar cane juice will be equally costlier than ever before.

    That shows the value and importance of rain in a country such as India. Merciful God is the only hope for our survival and growth. God help us all

    You have rightly emphasized the importance of water. This year there will be severe scarcity of water in many places in India! In places like Marathwada stored water in houses is kept under lock, key, and guard due to many robberies of water containers taking place!! People who have active bore wells are minting money by supplying tanker water and those having water bottling facilities too are minting money!! Ground water is depleting very fast, many borewells are getting dry!! This is a vicious cycle and portends very bad for the future as the entire area will go dry after a period of time due to wanton drilling of bores!! Here too in Karnataka there is severe shortage of rainfall this year! Mangluru too will face a severe water crunch this summer especially those staying in flats and not resorting to water conservation techniques and rain water harvesting!!

    Mumbai has an estimated water stored equal to next 233 days supply, much less than the average!!

    Some big agency has rightly said 'IN FUTURE WARS WILL BE FOUGHT FOR WATER'! People will awaken at that time from their deep slumber, but it will be too late!!

    Why poor people have to buy a sugarcane stick for a whooping 250 bucks, these blood sucking opportunists should be boycotted to teach them a lesson!!

    BTW, there is absolutely no control over prices of essential items even though commodity prices and fuel prices have come down substantially, price once raised never comes down! A loaf of bread which used to cost 22 bucks was jacked up to 28 but it is still holding there, not a single penny down!! Today the markets is a traders paradise, customers have no say whatsoever with no price control from the authorities!! Jai Hind!!
