PM Modi dines with Fortune 500 CEOs, assures reforms

New York, Sep 25 (IANS): In a 90-minute dinner meeting with 42 of the world's top corporate leaders here on Thursday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched for stronger inflow of foreign investments into India, outlining continuity in reforms, prompt decisions and transparency as areas of priority.

The chief executives were impressed. But they wanted the prime minister to quicken the pace of reforms.

"Foreign direct investment all over the world has fallen. But in India, it increased by 40 percent. This reflects confidence in the Indian economy," the prime minister said during the interaction on Thursday evening with the chief executives, drawn from Fortune 500 companies.

"Reform in governance is my Number One priority. We are for simplified procedures, speedy decision-making, transparency and accountability," the prime minister, before dining with them at the Waldorf Towers Hotel in Manhattan where he is staying.

Indian officials said the net worth of all the companies represented at the meet was over $4.5 trillion. They included Ford, Lockheed Martin, DuPont, IBM, GE, Boeing, Pepsi, CitiBank, Starwood, MasterCard, Marriot, Caterpillar, Merck, Qualcomm, Saandisc and Cisco.

Earlier, the prime minister participated in two roundtables -- one on financial sector and the other on "Media, Technology and Communications - Growth Story for India". At both meetings, the chief executives said they saw India as among the top five markets to do business with.

Modi also met individually with the US-India Business Council chair Ajay Banga, industrialist and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, Lockheed Martin chief Marillyn A. Hewson and Aecom chief executive Mike Burke.

Among them, Bloomberg said his business empire in India was employing around 2,500 people currently, of which 98 percent were Indians, He said the intention was to double the numbers soon. Modi thanked the former mayor for his insights, as he is also India's knowledge partner for "Smart Cities" project.

Later, the prime minister himself gave an update on his meetings during the packed day.

"Met top American CEOs from media and entertainment sector. They were enthusiastic about the change 'Digital India' initiative is driving," Modi tweeted, adding: "Digital technology has a vital role in making democracy stronger and in overall human resource development."

More specifically, the prime minister also spoke of his government's vision to connect the 600,000-odd villages in India with broadband and emphasized that digital technology will increasingly play a major role in further strengthening democracy and India's development narrative.

"My interaction with the Fortune 500 CEOs was on investment opportunities in India and why they must come and 'Make in India'," said the prime minister.

Amitabh Kant, secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, who was present during most of the meetings, said later that the general drift of the interaction with top CEOs was vibrant, constructive and positive -- all this "over exotic Indian cuisine".

Briefing the media, India's foreign office spokesperson Vikas Swarup said the prime minister made it a point to interact with each of the 42 chef executives at the dinner meet and was particularly keen to understand which were their areas of concern which his government could address and resole.

"By and large the mood was upbeat. There was a general consensus that the prime minister was effecting change in India. The only thing which these chief executives said was: Please make these changes faster," Swarup said.

The prime minister said he believed in deregulation and in giving private sector the space to develop, with predictable, transparent and accountable government.

Arun Singh, India's Ambassador tom the US, said: "It came through clearly that -- and most people felt -- this was a very good moment for India in the global context." He said there was also support for the prime minister's "Make in India", "Skill India", "Digital India" and "Smart Cities" programmes.

India must get ready to welcome Multinatioanls. For that Modi must realise that the "BAN" should be banned. For Example UAE has Pubs,Wine Shops,Mujrah dance and all those things which makes night life very much alive. We can have pork, beaf, and all sorts of meat..... We can celebrate Diwali, Dassera, Christmas and even immerse Lord Ganesha. Only have to follow some simple rules.

We need such environment in India for Foreign Investment. Modi cant achieve it unless he controls all those radicals.

It is very evident that the world is now seeing India as a great opportunity. We have manpower, infrastructure & progress which is better amongst third world developing countries which are competing with us.

This is a good beginning and if Modi's sales pitch even has a 25% effectiveness, next few years will indeed be our country's glory!

Look at this from India's perspective. Its a first time attempt at a PM meeting with the Fortune 500 Chiefs. Getting an event conducted like this itself is an achievement.

Coming to investments, Like I commented earlier, even if 25% of these are thru in next few years, it's a giant leap for a country like India!

Manufacturing industry, commercial venture, infrastructure, social all stand to be benefited. There will be job creation within the country. Look at this positively

Anata, you are absolutely right on this one. Since time immemorial the world has been seeing India as an opportunity and the opportunists have plundered this land to the core! Look what's happening currently, Modi is on a shopping spree overseas, amassing warfare is not the solution, most of the leaders have been doing that since stone age. Wisdom lies in avoiding the war by making ourselves a strong economic force to reckon with. And for that to happen, our exports have to outweigh imports and except for software industry, there's no sign of such a thing happening in the vicinity. An efficient and wise leadership would boost out agricultural produce and exports as agriculture is our only hope and that continues to be neglected. On the other hand, appeasement of corporate world seems to be the order of the day!

Karthik then why do we need investments from US, when India has got plenty of resources, we critiscize US for their attitude towards other nations and some comments made on Indian issues, but we will beg with them for investments and they are good. And regarding the organizations like RSS and others contribute nothing to the country but only hatred towards minority and interfere in political issues and openly support a political party and a particular community is fooled

Modi doesn't have hatred towards any community in our country, for him all 125 crore Indians are equal and he has said this time and again. It is hatred against Modi filled in you by the Congress which is making you say so.
BJP is pro FDI but they don't want FDI in all sectors they are opposed to FDI in multi brand retail which they have made clear time and again. Modi doesn't believe in freebies he believes in making people self sustainable by providing them jobs while Congress believes in keeping them poor & throwing freebies & that too with a scam

When MMS was PM, Modi was not leader of opposition but the CM of Gujarat so how could he oppose MMS?
Secondly MMS failed to get the FDI because of the massive scams, retrospective taxation introduced by them FM Pranab Mukherjee due to which investors lost confidence not because of BJP. As far as Karnataka BJP is concerned you are right they gave worst administration there is no doubt about that even I hated their rule.

When some children of US chanted some sanskrit mantra it is alright that he appreciated them, but he told that if the same children had told same mantras in India then pseudo Seculars would have raised hell against it.
