Mangaluru, Sep 28: One group of the Muslim community allegedly demolished a prayer centre belonging to another group of the same community at Kadandale in Moodbidri here on Sunday September 27.

It is alleged that a group of people belonging to Salafi group demolished the centuries-old Asirkhan centre of the Sunni group.

Sunni Muslims who have been living in and around Kadandale for centuries had built the Asirkhan prayer centre on a burial ground at Golidadi. Moharam would be celebrated here with much fervour.

Meanwhile, the Salafi Muslims built a mosque in an adjacent land, after which, dispute over land arose between the two groups.

On Sunday, a group of Salafi Muslims came to the spot with a JCB when no one was around and demolished the Asirkhan centre, it is alleged.

As news spread, Sunni Muslims gathered at the spot and just as tension started to prevail, local leaders Sucharita Shetty, Ramesh Poojary, panchayat member Dinesh and others pacified the two groups.

Moodbidri police have registered a case.
