Bangalore, July 16: A meeting of like-minded people held here recently demanded a legislation to ban religious conversions.

"Similar laws have been implemented in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa", they said.

Giving details of the meeting to the media, former Governor Justice Rama Jois said it was suggested in the meeting that all religious leaders should write a letter to the State Government in this regard. People's representatives should also bring pressure on the Government to ban conversions in the State.

"Some Christian Missionaries are luring poor people with money and false promises. They mainly operate in slums of urban areas, villages and areas where poor people live. This should be stopped", he added.

The meeting appreciated the role of some religious heads who are keen to prevent conversions. It supported and appreciated the role of certain youth who fought against conversions.

The meeting also called upon the people to eradicate, the practice of untouchability among Hindus.

"This will reduce the chances of religious conversions", observed Justice Jois.
