Jammu, July 18: A top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander Abu Umar, was today gunned down by the security forces at Bhaderwah in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said.
However, a woman was also killed, he added.
In a pre-dawn operation, on a tip-off, troops of four Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and state police cordoned off a house at Haveli Mohalla in Bhaderwah wherein the LeT commander involved in the killing of Deputy Superintendent of Police Shally Singh of J&K Police's Special Operations Group recently had taken a shelter.
''When Abu Umar was challenged by the troops, he opened indiscriminate fire and attempted to slip into a nearby house.
The ultra lobed a grenade and fired at the door, killing a woman inhabitant on the spot,'' SSP Doda Manohar Singh told sources.
The victim was identified as Mahira Begum, wife of Abdul Qayoom.
An AK rifle, three magazines, a binocular and grenades were among the large quantity of arms and ammunition recovered from the site of operation, he added.
