London, Jul 18: Shilpa Shetty, easily the most popular Indian in Britain thanks to her performance on reality show Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year, will be awarded a honorary doctorate by the Leeds Metropolitan University today.

The award will be conferred on her as part of the university's summer graduation celebrations, and is in recognition of her contribution to cultural diversity and good relations between the people of India and the UK.

In June, the university had conferred similar doctorates on India's Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Indian film personalities Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra and Shabana Azmi.

Shetty was in Leeds in June for the annual IIFA awards. The Leeds Metropolitan University is the official education partner of IIFA, offering students and staff the chance to rub shoulders with champions of Indian Cinema, particularly through the university's Northern Film School.

The university is also in the process of establishing two academic chairs: the IIFA Chair for Global Cinema, and an India 60 Chair celebrating 60 years of Indian independence.

Well, Shilpa Shetty is a smart operator. When she was totally faded and washed out in Bollywood with virtually no future in sight, she gets into the reality show, "Celebrity Big Brother" and creates a big hungama beyond any reasonable stretch of imagination, which attracted many sympathy votes for her, that resulted her in winning show.

How cute? Then, she was invited by Rt. Hon. Keith Vaz, the first U.K. Member of Parliament of Goan origin, from Bardez to be precise, to Parliament and he also arranged meeting for her with ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair and others. After this hype, she managed audiences with highly sacred Indian netas.

This smart lady, with her highly publicised sobs and release of pseudo emotions, has created a conducive environment in all spheres of English life. Now wonders of wonder, Leeds Metropolitan University may have already conferred her with the Honorary Doctorate today. Who knows, she may get offers from Hollywood or British films. Well, I admire her guts and dogged pursuits of her goals. Whatever dough she has made are all through legal means and she has every right to enjoy it.
