Guwahati, Jul 20: The Communist Party of India (CPI) today demanded that the border between Nagaland and Assam, as of 1925, should be accepted by both the states.
This step would end the decade-long border problem in the region.
Addressing a news conference here today, CPI National Executive member Pramode Gogoi said that since Nagaland and Assam both had accepted the 1925 border it should be the present basis also.
''Even in 1953 also Nagaland had accepted that as a border ad after that only Nagaland had taken a different stand'' he said.
According to him Nagaland had been trying to annexe part of Assam from N.C Hills to Sivsagar district because of its economic importance as the area has large reserve of timber, oil and tea.
He urged the Union Government to intervene urgently and resolve the matter at the earliest. ''We strongly condemn the attack by the Nagas'' he said.
On the law and order situation, he accused that complete anarchy had prevailed in the state. ''We have seen murder by former militants within high security cantonment area. This happens only in Assam and the government has lost all control over the ground situation,'' he sad.
Demanding intervention by the Central Government, he said ''Law and order situation has sharply deteriorated in the last few months and the Assam Government is not in a position to protect lives and property of the people.''
