London, Jul 22: India-born Dhiren Barot, who was jailed for life last year for plotting to blow up New York, has been released from a hospital after receiving treatment in secret. Barot had been treated for severe injuries inflicted in prison, IC Berkshire reported on Saturday.

Thirty five-year-old Barot was treated at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, the report said.

Police refused give details about how he had been injured. But unconfirmed reports said he had been scalded at Frankland Prison in Durham last week.

Barot was born into a Hindu family in Gujarat. He converted into Islam at the age of 20 in the UK where his father was working in a factory. He travelled to Pakistan in 1995 and took part in militant campaigns against Indian forces in Kashmir. He served as an agent for Al-Qaeda in the early 2000s. The British police arrested him in August, 2004.
